A cavity, also known as caries, is an area of tooth decay that has progressed far enough that a filling is needed to fix the problem. Cavities are the most common chronic disease of childhood and affect many adults as well. They are caused by bacteria in the mouth that break down food particles and produce acids that can eat away at the protective enamel of the tooth. Given enough time, these acids can eventually work their way into the center of a tooth and cause significant decay and a cavity to form.
The best way to prevent cavities is through proper oral hygiene at home. This includes brushing your teeth at least twice a day, flossing once a day, rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash, and seeing your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Also, limit your consumption of sugary foods and beverages, as these can fuel the growth of harmful oral bacteria.
If you suspect you have a cavity, seeking treatment right away is important before the problem worsens and becomes more costly to repair. Treatments for cavities include fillings, crowns, bonding, bridges, root canal therapy, and even tooth extraction in extreme cases. Usually, your dentist will take a look at your tooth and determine the extent of the decay. If the decay is minimal, we recommend a simple restoration like a tooth-colored filling or bonding treatment. If your tooth has severe decay, we may recommend a dental crown. You'll leave our office with a permanent restoration that will restore the health and beauty of your smile for years to come!
Signs of cavities can include pain when biting down or chewing, visible pits or holes in the teeth, chronic bad breath, or discoloration of the affected tooth. If any of your teeth are exhibiting any of these signs, it's time to see the dentist as soon as possible for a checkup and possible dental treatment.
